Shagreen, fish leather, cows leather, lizard leather, mother of pearl buttons, coque feather and pheasant feather (2024)

To textile dealer Jess Maybury, reworking and reassembling textiles is just as exciting an operation as sourcing her treasures. With sensitivity and hilarity, she excavates concealed kernels by reassembling and reinterpreting offcuts from her extraordinary casket of skins and bedspreads. Like watching an aesthetic maestro with a glue gun and and flair for colour, her enraptured fanclub pines for the palette of the futuristic bodies she smoothly exhibits. Frankenstein-esque in her collaging endeavours, Maybury recomposes a shattered world while preserving its discourse: sources and material are always honoured and curated in an entirely personal way. As I giggle I understand emulating human madness is the language she uses for a powerful tribute to the yarn spinners that are never passé. In fact she tells the tale of a brighter time to come and succeeds fluently as she designs what we all hope our children will look like.
